Town Passes Sports Betting Ordinance

January 21, 2022 (Chesapeake Beach, MD)- During the January 20, 2022 Town Council meeting, Ordinance O-21-7 was passed by the Town Council allowing the Town to collect tax revenue on brick and mortar sports betting within the municipal limits. Councilwoman Beaudin moved to approve Ordinance O-21-7, Seconded by Councilwoman Hartman. Ayes, Council Vice President Larry Jaworski, Councilwoman Beaudin, Councilwoman Hartman, Councilmen Fink and Councilman Pardieck.  Opposed, Councilman Morris. Motion Passes.

Ordinance O-21-7, expands Admission and Amusement Tax for the Town of Chesapeake Beach to include Sports Betting for Class A1, A2, Class B1, and Class B2 Licenses.

During the 2020 Town Election, citizens answered two (2) ballot questions related to expanded gambling activities in Town. In response, the Town Council acted to prevent expanded gambling activities in Town by passing Ordinance #O-21-1 which Prohibited Full Casino Licenses or Sports Betting Licenses communicating citizens desires to the State of Maryland. The State pre-empted the Town allowing sports betting within the municipal limits of Chesapeake Beach. Ordinance O-21-7 is required in order for the Town to be able to collect tax revenue on sports betting, at the same rate as all other gaming activities in Town, to offset the burden on Town citizens.
