More information about National Heritage Areas: National Heritage Areas (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov). At this point in time, the legislation to make Southern Maryland a National Heritage Area has been introduced into the United States Congress, and the required Feasibility Study is on the way to completion.

Community Input and Participation is Requested. Here is how you can join the conversation to learn more.  

Please join the consultants as they update where they are in the process and review important components of the Feasibility Study, a study that meets the criteria for National Heritage Area designation.

Presentations will focus on:
 
  • Identification of a geographic boundary
  • Development of a statement of national significance
  • Development of story-based interpretive themes and historic context
  • Creation of an inventory of historic, cultural, and natural resources
Additionally, the agenda will include:
 
  • Participant discussion and feedback
  • An update on Congressional legislation for National Heritage Area designation
  • Next steps and timeline for study completion
  • What will happen after the Community Conversations?
  • Steps toward completion of the feasibility study will include:
  • Public input and finalizing themes and resource inventory
  • Organizational and financial plans
  • National Park Service review of draft study
  • Final study
